About the Job

Position Summary

The University of Minnesota Libraries seeks an individual as a Project Archivist to process human rights related collections located in the University of Minnesota Archives and the Social Welfare History Archives. The position reports to the University Archivist.

The Project Archivist will work under moderate supervision to organize and describe archival collections guided by departmental procedures and professional standards. The Project Archivist will employ a processing methodology to allow for flexibility to conduct more detailed description when appropriate. Project completion will produce descriptions for each collection by creating standards-based online finding aids using the archival information management tool ArchivesSpace.

This is a temporarily funded position for the University of Minnesota Archives. This project has been financed in part by the people of Minnesota through a grant funded by an appropriation to the Minnesota Historical Society from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

This position will require work to be done primarily on-site.

Responsibilities

Archival Processing (70%)
  • Organize and arrange items in the collections both physically and intellectually.
  • Describe collections through analyzing, organizing, and recording details about the collection, such as creator, title, dates, extent, and contents.
  • Describe series arrangement, scope, and content, and conduct historical research as needed.
  • Create accurate lists of the processed material; review student-produced lists.
  • Inventory and describe all electronic files and media; work with the Digital Archivist to develop a preservation plan.
  • Re-house materials as appropriate.
  • Identify preservation issues or concerns.
  • Conduct basic preservation tasks as needed.
Project Management (20%)
  • Conduct detailed background research on related individuals, activities, and organizations.
  • Develop a work plan with milestones for project completion.
  • Survey identified collections and prepare processing plans best suited to each situation.
  • Sequence collections for processing.
  • Partial supervision of a student assistant.
Project Promotion & Reporting (10%)
  • Provides regular progress updates to the supervisor.
  • Prepares statistical/tracking information and project narratives to include in reports to granting agency.
  • Publish collection guides to aid in the discoverability of the archival materials using the ArchivesSpace collection management tool.
  • Provide content for project promotion; may present on project activities.
Qualifications

Required:
  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience or a combination of education and experience to equal at least six years.
  • Previous archival processing experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of archival professional standards and procedures.
Preferred:
  • Previous experience completing a time-bound project.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets to track and analyze data.
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace.
  • Familiarity with methods to review, manage, and describe born-digital archival records.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines as part of a team and autonomously.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $26.00 - $28.84 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment, 40 hours/week, Temporary
