Description

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 27 country and territory members. We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

The Strategy, Performance and Learning Division (SPL ) is a specialised unit within SPC’s Office of the Director-General. SPL has staff based at our headquarters in Noumea, as well as our regional office in Suva. The team has the following core functions: (i) guiding strategic direction through development of the Pacific Community Strategic Plan and facilitation of the Subcommittee of the Council of Representatives of Governments and Administration (CRGA) that oversights the implementation of the plan (ii) increasing development effectiveness through leading and coordinating corporate monitoring, evaluation, reflection, reporting and learning; (iii) supporting the Director-General and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) in undertaking strategic corporate initiatives, including organisational planning, organisational improvement or research and co-design of innovative and integrated projects and programmes, and iv) serving as a strategic coordination point for key relationships with external stakeholders, including member countries and territories, donors and development partners.

The role the Intern – Innovation Project Support  will work with the Strategy and Innovation team to provide coordination support to the SPC’s internal innovation programme, Funding with Intent (FIT). The purpose of the internship is to provide qualified students the opportunity to gain practical work experience in an international environment and in the area of their university studies and interests.

 

The key responsibilities of the role include the following:

Under the overall guidance of the Lead – Strategy and Innovation, and reporting directly to the Innovation and Design Adviser, the intern will support the delivery and continuous improvement of the Funding with Intent programme. 

  • Supporting the collection of information and maintenance of the Funding with Intent tracker, reporting database, and other relevant management and monitoring tools. 
  • Supporting the development of knowledge products (e.g., factsheets, performance stories, Excel databases) to improve knowledge management of the programme. 
  • Contributing to the design of new strategies for future Funding with Intent calls focusing on climate adaptation. 
  • Supporting programme coordination and continuous improvement of the Funding with Intent programme. 
  • Supporting the Convening and facilitating of meetings, design sessions, and learning, sharing, and reflection sessions for SPC teams receiving Funding with Intent.

Key selection criteria

Qualifications

  • University student required to complete a work placement as part of an undergraduate or master’s programme in order to obtain academic credits, or recent graduate (within the last 12 months) seeking to gain relevant professional experience aligned with their field of study.

Technical expertise

  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to think innovatively 
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills 
  • Sensemaking and visual reporting skills to synthesise and communicate insights 
  • Digital literacy, including familiarity with digital tools and platforms

Language skills

  • Clear communication, both written and verbal, in English 

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Knowledge of Pacific Island countries and territories is an advantage

 

Salary, terms and conditions

Allowance – The Intern – Innovation Project Support  will receive a stipend of XPF 65,000 - 130,000 per month for a Noumea-Based internship and FJD 20-40 per working days for a Suva-based internship.

Duty Station – The internship can be based at SPC headquarter in Noumea, New Caledonia or at its regional office in Suva, Fiji.

Contract Duration – The duration of the internship is six months. The intern is required to work five days a week during office hours.
