Job Description

Job Summary: 

The EHS Safety Specialist leads and implements the organization’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs to ensure full compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. The Safety Specialist works closely with operations and leadership to develop proactive safety programs that protect employee health, workplace safety, and public health.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS and safety programs tailored to steel fabrication operations, including training for new hires and safety training for welding, cranes, forklifts, and material handling equipment.

  • Promote a proactive safety culture through regular safety meetings, communication initiatives, and employee engagement programs focused on workplace health and safety.

  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies through regular safety audits, inspections, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments.

  • Conduct detailed investigations of workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions that strengthen workplace safety and environmental protection.

  • Support public health and employee safety by ensuring safe working conditions and minimizing exposure to workplace hazards.

  • Lead emergency preparedness efforts including evacuation planning, fire drills, first-aid readiness, and emergency response training.

  • Manage and coordinate environmental compliance programs, public health, including hazardous materials management, waste handling, emissions monitoring, and welding byproduct control in accordance with EPA and local environmental regulations.

  • Track and maintain environmental permits related to air quality, waste disposal, and water discharge, ensuring accurate reporting and regulatory compliance.

  • Collaborate with production and operations teams to integrate EHS safety standards into daily operations, SOPs, and 5S / lean manufacturing initiatives.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives such as Kaizen and lean manufacturing projects to improve operational efficiency while enhancing workplace safety and environmental performance.

  • Maintain and continuously improve safety procedures including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, equipment safety protocols, and hazard communication.

  • Ensure proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce workplace safety practices.

  • Work collaboratively with team members to achieve production goals while maintaining strong EHS safety standards.

  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and codes of conduct.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) or Safety Specialist roles, such as EHS Safety Specialist, Environmental Safety Specialist, or Industrial Safety Specialist, preferably in steel fabrication, metalworking, manufacturing, or industrial environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, Public Health, or a related field preferred.

  • Certifications:

    • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.

    • OSHA Train-the-Trainer Certification preferred or willingness to obtain within 180 days of hire.

    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) preferred.

    • HAZWOPER certification or welding safety certifications are a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA safety regulations, including 29 CFR 1910.252 welding safety standards.

  • Knowledge of EPA environmental compliance regulations and state-level environmental requirements such as TCEQ air permits.

  • Understanding of workplace safety programs, public health, risk management, and environmental protection practices.

  • Familiarity with 5S methodology and lean manufacturing safety integration in industrial environments.

  • Ability to evaluate safety and environmental risks associated with welding, cutting, fabrication, and material handling operations.

  • Strong communication skills to conduct safety training and collaborate with welders, operators, material handlers, maintenance teams, and supervisors.

  • Experience using EHS management software to track safety incidents, environmental compliance metrics, and corrective actions.

  • Ability to analyze safety data and prepare reports on workplace safety performance, environmental impact, and sustainability initiatives.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Ability to work on-site at the McGregor, Texas, facility with occasional travel to support international projects.

  • Ability to read, write, and understand basic English and/or Spanish to follow safety instructions and workplace guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong reliability, communication skills, and professional work ethic.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, dust, and industrial equipment.

  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling materials.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a professional steel fabrication and manufacturing environment, with controlled exposure to noise, dust, and equipment.

  • The role requires routine inspections in fabrication shops and occasional outdoor work with proper safety and environmental protections.

  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required for safety audits, environmental inspections, training programs, or emergency preparedness activities.

  • Required PPE includes safety glasses, hard hats, and steel-toed boots.

Work Schedule:  

  • Full-time: Standard day shift, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, with flexibility to support production needs.
