Job Summary

Minnesota Lawyers Mutual’s (MLM) longtime CFO is retiring. We are seeking someone to take the helm as MLM’s new CFO. This is a rare and exciting opportunity at a highly respected company that is viewed as a pillar of the Minnesota business community.

Reporting directly to the President/CEO, the CFO serves as a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for managing the company's finance function. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced finance executive who is equally comfortable in the boardroom and in the details.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead financial strategy and planning, including reserve management, profitability analysis, capital adequacy, solvency planning, and budgeting — ensuring alignment with MLM's goals and strategic vision.
  • Oversee risk management, regulatory compliance and financial reporting, internal and external audits, enterprise risk benchmarking, and reinsurance strategy and administration. Activities include preparation of consolidated financial statements, tax returns, AM Best reviews, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Direct investment management and lead strategic initiatives including M&A due diligence, capitalization, and reporting. The CFO will assist with data analytics and employ technology-forward thinking across the finance function.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls, accounting systems, and financial policies.
  • Partner with the President/CEO and to manage HR, payroll, compensation, and benefits programs.
  • Model MLM's values as a member of the executive leadership team; foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and develop finance and accounting staff and lead cross-functional projects.
  • Oversee all financial reporting, consolidated financial statements, tax returns, AM Best annual review, audits, and month-end/year-end close processes; implement and maintain internal controls, accounting systems, and financial policies.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant finance experience demonstrating increased responsibilities.
  • Minimum of 7 years of insurance finance and leadership experience.
  • Degree in related field with a master’s degree (MBA) preferred or other relevant industry certification (i.e., actuarial); highly relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of advanced degree.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance reporting and compliance, GAAP and statutory accounting, financial reporting, and compliance.
  • Experience in professional liability insurance a plus.
